How can DECA help my students after high school? Back To Top DECA provides opportunities for its members to explore career options, gain real-world experience, and take on a leadership role. The skills that DECA helps its members develop are skills that employers are looking for in potential employees, and they're the skills that colleges and universities look for on applications. How does DECA fit in with my curriculum? Back To Top DECA provides practical ways for your students to experience and practice what you are teaching them. Through DECA's program of competitive events, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge through both written and role playing events. DECA also holds several conferences throughout the year that give its members an opportunity to have hands-on experience in the industry they're interested in. Check out the Marketing Conference in New York City, the Disney Y.E.S. Seminar, or one of DECA's Sports & Entertainment Marketing workshops for more information. Where can my chapter get the money to be involved? Back To Top Most schools use a combination of ways to fund their DECA program. Members pay dues, and participate in fundraising projects. Several chapters are fortunate enough to have a school store that will help the organization, and many schools use Perkins funding for DECA, which is an approved Career & Technical Student Organization. What are competitions like? Back To Top DECA has three ways to compete. The first involves a research project that is completed throughout the school year. Most of these events can be done with a team. The next type is the Management Team Decision Making Event (or MDM Event). The MDM's consist of a team of two people that work together on a case situation, and then present it to the judge. There's also a test in the occupational area that the team is competing in. Series events are DECA's most popular type of event. These are individual events, that consist of a series of activities. Students take tests in their chosen career area, and demonstrate the skills that they learn in the classroom through role-playing events with the judges. What does D. E. C. A. stand for? Back To Top The letters D. E. C. A. do not stand for anything any more. Prior to 1990, DECA stood for Distributive Education Clubs of America. As DECA and Marketing Education were becoming more comprehensive, the term "Distributive Education" became too limiting for what the organization was becoming. Therefore, DECA is no longer an acronym, and is identified as "An Association of Marketing Students." How can I get someone to come and present to my class?
