Start the DECA year off right by attending Michigan DECA's Boot Camp: A Competitive and Leadership Driven Experience. The State Leadership Conference has been redesigned to help your students excel in DECA's Competitive Events Program. FOCUS Training will present leadership development activities designed to help each student compete at the district and state conferences. The activities will teach the students how to think on their feet and to react to questions presented by the judge(s). Information on these activities can be found on the next page. In addition to the leadership activities, the conference will have sessions on preparing for a marketing career, continuing your education and exhibits from colleges, school store, and fund-raising vendors.

Challenging activities that are both educational and enjoyable have been designed for delegates to explore all the opportunities available through DECA. The conference will begin with a banquet and opening session which will set the direction for the conference.

An expanded aspect of this year's conference will be the leadership activities for all delegates on Monday night. The leadership activities will be designed to develop each participant's critical thinking skills in a way to help each member address situations presented in a competitive event. Monday night sessions will be followed by a dance which will allow the participants to meet other delegates.

Tuesday's sessions will continue helping members select and understand the event that is best for them. Tentative DECA sessions will include: learning how to succeed with Series Events, tips on how to start written events and the Merit Award Program. The conference will conclude with an exciting session that will inform each delegate about Michigan DECA's programs and activities

It is our goal that by participating in these activities each delegate will leave the conference with the skills needed to have a successful year and actively participate in DECA's competitive events program.

mPower

FOCUS Training will provide activity based workshops that are specifically designed to help develop the leadership skills that will help you succeed in DECA and beyond. Leaders mPower members of their organization through the careful development and use of essential skills. These leadership skills, as listed below, are crucial to the success of any DECA member, from competition to chapter programming:

Effective Communication: A leader must possess the ability to effectively communicate with everyone. Communication allows for the successful completion of goals, promoting of projects, and selling the judge on your solution in competition.

Teamwork: Almost every accomplishment is the result of the efforts of many people. Successful DECA members learn to work effectively with teammates, handle conflict resolution, and balance perspectives to create healthy team dynamics.

Vision Development: Leaders use techniques such as goal setting, delegation, and empowerment to keep themselves and the chapter on track. Skilled competitors use time management skills and organization techniques to prepare and perform. At this conference you will further develop these visionary skills.

Professionalism: Successful DECA members are sharp young professionals. They understand how to make a positive impression, build relationships, and present themselves in a way that impresses those they meet!

This year's Fall Leadership Conference will mPower you to succeed in DECA's competitive events program, fine tune your individual leadership skills, and give you the opportunity to network with MI DECA members from across the state!

Action Packed. Fun and Educational. You won't want to miss this workshop! Visit the FOCUS Training home page for more information. www.focustraining.com

Hotel Reservation Procedures
Room reservations should be sent directly to the hotel, using the enclosed form,
Reservations must be prepaid!

Student delegates may be housed two, three or four to a room. For this conference, you will have the choice of housing your chapter together, thus paying the added cost of a double or triple room over a quad room. Or, you may assign one, two or three students to a quad room and arrange with another chapter to fill the balance of the room. The hotel is NOT able to match students to fill rooms.

Advisors will have to contact other schools to fill quad rooms.

Advisors have the option of staying in a single or double room. If you wish to room with someone from a different chapter, you must indicate the name and school of the person you wish to room with, on the Hotel Registration Form.

In the event a delegate cancels and you are unable to re-assign your delegates or arrange for a delegate(s) from another chapter, you are responsible for full payment of that portion of the assigned room. In the event a delegate does not show up for a reserved room, the same condition applies.

There will be no state tax charged on the room, provided a copy of your school's Tax Exempt Certificate is included with your payment, in the form of a school issued check. There is a 5% local tax that is included in the room rate.

The Lansing Holiday Inn-South has a pool and exercise room, which will be available for the delegates to use. Free parking is provided at the hotel.

The phone number for the Lansing Holiday Inn-South is: (517) 694-8123. The hotel is located off I-96 at exit 104. A map will be sent with your registration confirmation.

Definition of Room Types:
A King Room will consist of one king bed. Up to two individuals can stay in this room with only one bed.
A Triple Room will consist of a king bed and a roll-a-way, or at the hotel's choosing, two queen
beds. Three individuals can stay in this room with the two beds.
A Double/Double Room will consist of two queen beds. Four students or two adults can
use this room type. If two adults want to have separate beds, they must request this type of
accommodations. Due to a limited number of rooms, two students cannot use this room type

Incidental Charges
The hotel has placed a restriction on all DECA guest rooms for outside phone use
(local and long distance), and pay-per-view movie services. However, if you would prefer any one or all
of your guest rooms to have either or both of these services, a credit card imprint must be given at the
front desk to make these services available.

Registration Fee
Attending Both Days: $45.00 per delegate (students and advisors). The fee includes two meals, participation in all sessions, the dance, and registration materials.
Attending Tuesday Only: $40.00 per delegate (students and advisors). The fee includes one meal, participation in all Tuesday sessions, and registration materials.

Meals
Delegates attending both days will be provided two meals from the registration fee, Monday dinner and Tuesday lunch. Delegates electing to attend on Tuesday will only receive lunch. Breakfast will be the responsibility of each chapter/delegate.

Advisors' Meeting and Assistance
There will be a special meeting for all advisors, on each day of the conference. Advisors will be assigned to sessions to monitor participation and behavior. Each advisor and chaperone are asked to assist with supervision at the conference, by being visible on the floors and at the dance. To keep the registration fee as low as possible, we have elected to use advisors in place of outside security.

Advisors and chaperones are asked to list which activity they would like to assist with on their registration form.

. Monday dance (10:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.)

. Tuesday session host (a two hour shift)

Khaki (Docker) style pants (no cargo pants) will be appropriate for both males and females. Ladies should have blouses, sweaters, polo-style or collared shirts. Gentlemen should wear sweaters, polo-style, or collared shirts. Denim, t-shirts, hats, and cargo pants are not allowed.
