The Brian Johnson Outstanding Service Award is awarded yearly to the Alumni member who goes above and beyond to serve Michigan Alumni DECA to the highest standard. It is the highest honor given to an alumni member. Brian was a former District 4 representative and Alumni member. Before Brian’s tragic death he was the most dedicated, hard working, and likable individuals imaginable. If you ever needed something done, Brian would do it. After his death in a car accident in 1994, Michigan Alumni DECA created an award in his name and memory to present every year to the Alumni member who goes above and beyond for Michigan DECA. It is a great honor, and a very humbling experience to receive this award.
Last year’s recipient was Brad Schmidt ’97, a graduate of Wyandotte Roosevelt High School. He started his involvement with DECA in his freshman year, and competed at the district, state, and national levels freshman, sophomore and junior years. He served as the District 5 Representative his senior year, and ran for Central Region Vice President. He then went to Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI, where he got B.S. in Marketing in November of 2000. He now works at the Michigan DECA office where he still does a lot for DECA, while working as the State Coordinator for Michigan FCCLA, another career and technical student organization.
