These requirements are in effect for written events submitted to Michigan DECA. These requirements are in addition to the guidelines set by National DECA. Merit Award Guidelines are listed separately.
1. Three copies of each written event must be submitted: 2 copies each in their own specified official DECA notebook or folio [DECA Images Catalog #DSBND or WEF000] and 1 copy stapled with no binder.
2. The National DECA Statement of Assurances certifying the originality of the work must be signed by the advisor and the student before the event is submitted. The Statement of Assurances must be the first page of each entry. Entries submitted with missing or written information or pages will be penalized five points.
3. Entries must be in the following order: completed and signed Statement of Assurances, Cover Page, then the event following the guidelines set by National DECA. (Note - evaluation forms do not need to be included).
4. Entries with more than fifteen (15) penalty points will not be judged and the student(s) will not be allowed to attend the conference if they are not competing in another event.
5. All chapter advisors with a student entering a Written Event, Chapter Awards Project, or Merit Award Project, will be required to attend and assist with the Written Event Screening on Saturday, February 23. This includes written projects that have advanced on from a district conference. Advisors assisting may bring their events to the screening. Advisors with written events who are unable to attend the screening will be required to pay a $50.00 screening fee. The screening will be held at Eastern Michigan University.
6. Advisors assisting with the screening should arrive no earlier than 9:30 a.m. and no later than 10:00 a.m.
7. All entries (including the Chapter Awards Program and written projects advancing on from a district conference) must be completed and received by 10:00 a.m. on February 24. Events will not be accepted after 10:30 a.m.
8. If you are mailing the entries, they must be received by Friday, February 23. Eastern Michigan University does not have any delivery service on Saturday (including UPS, DHL, FedEx, US Mail, etc.). We recommend mailing with a return receipt or using a tracking method.
9. All events must be in the proper binder noted in the event’s guidelines. If it is not in the proper binder, Michigan DECA will place it in one at a charge of five (5) times the current list price. If copies need to be made there will be a $0.10 cost per page. All copies must be completed by the 10:30 a.m. deadline. Entries will not be accepted after 10:30 a.m.
10. Chapter advisors will review the work and assign penalty points.
11. Written event participants will have their orientation and interview on Friday at the State Conference.
